Our approach to chemical free sustainable beekeeping is actually pretty simple. Give the bees the tools they need and they will do the rest. A quality hive of the correct size and something for them to comfortably build comb from and they will be happy and do well. When we put them in a hive that is smaller or larger than the queen thinks they need one of two things will happen. 1. they will leave the hive in search of a new home or 2. they will stay and do poorly due to stress. Most of us don't realize that bees actually measure a new home. If the queen determines that it is too small she will leave. If she decides that it might be larger than needed she may stay but she puts more pressure on the workers to build comb faster in order to fill the space sooner. As the comb is built faster this in turn puts more pressure on the forager bees to keep up with the demand to fill the comb with pollen and nectar. This leads to stress and stress kills bees. Stress also causes grumpy bees.
When bees are introduced into a hive of the correct size and dimensions this eliminates the stress and results in happy and calm bees. Our hive design has been tested not only by myself but by many many happy customers. Give your bees the best chance possible to be happy and productive.
